Bill O'Reilly Smears San Francisco With Surreal Pseudo-Documentary (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/19/08 05:12 AM ET Updated: 06/15/11 04:23 PM ET

Oreily Smear Job

Bill O'Reilly is scared. As a daring crusader on the side of "traditional America" in the war against "secular progressives," O'Reilly fears that the "far left" will push President-elect Obama to embrace their values. As an example of the horrors that would befall us if this were to happen, O'Reilly offers up a surreal pseudo-documentary of San Francisco. O'Reilly sends producer Jesse Waters, whose sole journalistic value seems to be his utter lack of shame at chasing after and ambushing anyone O'Reilly points his finger at, to San Francisco because it represents 'far left government' at work.

Watching this video, one would think that ninety percent of San Francisco's population are either homeless, addicted to drugs, prostitutes, crazy, or some mix of all these. The video is an unbelievable smear on a great American city. The only thing worse than the video's message is the production value. After showing the video, O'Reilly interviews Waters for insight into how San Franciscans can live in such moral and physical squalor. Waters basically says the citizens of Frisco have accepted, and adjusted to, the fact their city is a hell hole. Actually, the city is so beyond the pale that O'Reilly once said he wouldn't mind if Al Qaida attacked the city. Watch and judge for yourself.

What are the women doing walking around SF with their strollers and babies? Get out of our city you stroller walking women. We'll stab ya! (yeah, I'm kidding censors)

And why would anyone want to go to the Presidio at night? Cold and boring!

O'Reilly is a constant. Once you know what that is you don't need to bother with it anymore i.e. a thug with an ulterior motive, everything he says and does has a political motive that serves an ultra-right political agenda; His shtick is aimed at the naïve, unsophisticated, and poorly educated. He foments, harnesses, and directs the fears, seething resentment, and the anger of ordinary unsophisticated people to serve the interests of the weathiest most powerful class of people. He appears to epitomise and concentrate the same envy, anger, sanctimoniousness, and resentment of his target audience. Everything depected in that little vignette of San Fran may be true (as far as it goes) but that is beside the point (which is to incite and manipulate his target audience).

As far as it goes? Washington DC has a red light district but that doesn't define the city. There are unfortunate people in every town big and small who are homeless. As far as it goes. He is exploiting people in and out of context to communicate a totally false message. He hopes to manipulate the narrow minded with more prejudice and misinformation. This falsumentory is just disgusting. And how large were the blinders worn by the maker? O'Reilly is one continuous crime against humanity.

You can't be serious. I'm a Southern California transplant living in SF now and I can definitively state that I feel safer in San Francisco than I ever did living in Los Angeles - and I love both cities. Safer than New York? *Really*? Of course San Francisco suffers from many of the problems that befall *any* urban center. Homeless people exist, they are not brushed aside and hidden in San Francisco. The difference about SF is that SFPD doesn't pick em up and drop em off in random places so that no one sees them. San Franciscans regularly interact with their homeless neighbors - they don't consider them a threat. But why am I even wasting my time writing this? It's Bill O'Reilly. Hopefully some fair-minded Republicans will see through the smear and understand that San Francisco just isn't for everyone. Yes, marijuana is officially the lowest-priority crime for SFPD. If you don't like that, this isn't the city for you.

Wow. I find this video very insulting and bias. I've worked in the quote on quote "bad neighborhoods" in sf for years with children- and the communities are very respectful of children. Majority of the people in sf are very thoughtful, considerate and intelligent. Our homeless population isn't a threat to us, they don't travel in pacts, and you'll often see them reading, playing chess and socializing with people who aren't homeless. I don't think that sf being accepting of social economical differences makes us radical, or that we've lost control of a once beautiful city. My partner & I were in the process of purchasing a home in the east bay, when we found out we were pregnant, and we immediately pulled out of the deal because there is no better place to raise a child then sf. I plan on giving my son the gift of awareness, so that he will never be as ignorant as o'reilly.

"Isn't it nice that people who prefer Los Angeles to San Francisco live there?"

He wouldn't go to the Presidio at night? What the hell? Is he scared of Raccoons? Possums?

Idiot.

This is just ridiculous. I've lived all over the U.S., and made San Francisco my home because it is an AWESOME city. Like any city, it has its quirks, and it has its not so nice areas. But it is a beautiful city full of wonderful people, too, and the good here FAR outweighs the bad. I have spent a considerable amount of time in Detroit, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Miami, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and visited New York a few times too. San Fran has them all beat, HANDS DOWN as far as I am concerned.

These guys don't have a clue.

First of all, don't call it "Frisco."

Except for the open marijuana smoking, this video could have been made in my home town, St. Petersburg, Florida. Homelessness and despair are rampant here too, Bill. Send me a video camera.

I've lived in San Francisco since 1978 and am happy to say that most people in San Francisco couldn't care less what Billy boy and his Fox friends have to say.

You would think a lot of kids would see this and want to go to San Francisco! But since the average age of his audience is 71, that ain't gonna happen.

Shoulda been there in the seventies and eighties, Bill. You wouldn't gotten some great sleazy footage.

San Fran is a dump based on the fact you have to work to avoid the nastiness. The wasted humans and the human waste are the worst in this city than any other I have been to in Europe, North America, and Japan.
03:18 AM on 11/23/2008
wow, where do you live? Because I swear it can't be SF, cuz that's where I live, and I couldn't disagree more.
01:58 PM on 11/21/2008
So yeah, I live in San Francisco, and sure there's parts like, but that's not really the whole city. This is like me going to the south and go to nothing but KKK rallies and say this is what the south is like. Also showing the picture of the castro and then showing pictures of strip clubs in North Beach, that's insulting implying a connection between the too. If you also listen, he seemed to say that North Beach and the Tenderloin are teh same palce.

I live in San Francisco - O'Reilly is right on.
