Woman targeted in $10,000 home improvement fraud, police say

Three men have been arrested, accused of charging an elderly LaGrange County woman $10,000 for $35 worth of materials and about half an hour of work.

A Fort Wayne man is among suspects who went to a home in Johnson Township in the Wolcottville area and told her she needed lightning rods installed on her roof, the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department said in a written statement. The makeshift rods were installed, the department said, but the roof was damaged by large nails driven into the shingles and siding.

The men from Fort Wayne, Texas and Pennsylvania were in custody, and the Indiana State Police and Fort Wayne police are assisting in the investigation.

Anyone who has been approached and solicited for home improvement work by someone in a newer red Chevrolet truck is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 260-463-7491.
