CineSkates is a portable tripod slider system that enables fluid, rolling video without the hassle of bulky camera gear.

Update 3: The CineSkates Kickstarter project has come to a close, and the support from our backers has been amazing. We are working to get all the CineSkates sent out quickly, and we are now taking pre-orders on the Cinetics web site: store.cinetics.com

Update 2: By popular demand, we added a new reward level for a ready-to-go CineSkates System for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S! This reward includes CineSkates, the GorillaPod Focus tripod, the GorillaPod BH1 Ballhead, and The Glif iPhone mount... one of our favorite Kickstarter projects!

Update 1: Wow! We reached the funding goal incredibly fast! We have plenty of CineSkates available though. You can still get in on the discounted Kickstarter pricing by becoming a backer! Every pledge is beyond helpful; thank you!

Thanks for checking out my Kickstarter project! Watch the video, become a backer and spread the word! Message me on Twitter or Facebook if you have any feedback or questions. Thanks! Justin

What are CineSkates?CineSkates™ are a set of three wheels that quickly attach to a tripod and enable fluid, rolling video in an ultra-portable package. Watch the video to see what they are capable of... CineSkates were used to film it!

CineSkates work specifically with the GorillaPod Focus tripod. A ballhead is also required... most small, strong ballheads will work great. Fortunately, JOBY, the maker of GorillaPod Focus and BallHead X has agreed to include their products in the CineSkates System at a generous price!

What rewards are available? You can get any reward shown in the table below by pledging the appropriate amount. We will send out a survey when the project completes to verify the reward you selected and gather your address.

What's the money for?
Backers of this project will be helping to create the first production run of CineSkates. Your pledges will enable me to move forward with orders for each of the 44 different parts in CineSkates and to continue building portable gear for filmmakers. Backers pledge to pay for their selected reward only if we meet the funding goal of $20,000. I'm grateful for every $1 pledged!

When will rewards ship?Update 10/12: We have all the CineSkates in our garage in final stages of assembly, and we're waiting on the cases to arrive. They are coming in next week, and we'll start getting boxes out the door as fast as we can after that. We plan to have everything shipped by the end of October.

What makes CineSkates so cool?CineSkates can produce shots that have previously been impossible or only possible with bulky and expensive equipment. Here are a few:

  • Arcing shots that rotate around objects
  • Sliding shots that push or pull the subject into focus
  • Rolling shots that glide over the subject
  • Time-lapse shots that move the camera slowly and smoothly
  • Panning shots that scan a wide area
  • "Worm's eye view" shots that slide just above the floor

Filmmakers will find CineSkates perfect for weddings, music videos, product demos, real estate ads, web videos, corporate films, and even for narrative and documentary films.

How do you use them? You'll be able to figure them out in no time... just line up the wheels and roll! But, like your camera, CineSkates have a learning curve. So, there will be a "How to use CineSkates" video, and I'll send the video link out to all project backers. I can't wait to see how you use them!

Will there be future CineSkates products? You know it! I designed CineSkates in two parts with a proprietary quick connection called cinetics connect™. This connection enables easy expansion to other tripods. It also enables other attachments, like robotic wheels, to be attachable to GorillaPod Focus and other tripods. Send me a Twitter or Facebook message if you have an idea for the cinetics connect platform!

What is Cinetics?

Cinetics is the company I started to sell CineSkates. It's just me and some friends that have volunteered tons of time toward the company, but we're hoping Kickstarter can help us take the company to the next level! Cinetics is based in Austin, Texas.

What is the Cinetics Lens Cloth? The Cinetics Lens Cloth is a useful reward for people that back at lower levels. The micro-fiber cloth quickly wraps up into a neoprene pouch that clips onto your camera. They work great for glasses and computer screens too. They turned out pretty slick!

Are CineSkates patented?
CineSkates have been patent pending since shortly after being invented in early 2011. The patent also covers other systems and methods for adapting camera mounting devices. Cinetics reserves the rights to the Cinetics and CineSkates names and the Cinetics logo.

  • The brackets are made from an injection molded plastic that is lightweight and durable. The wheels are molded from soft urethane, and the bearings are made from hardened chromium steel. A steel adjustable handle, low profile black-oxide steel hardware, and a portable neoprene case complete the design. The parts will all be assembled at the Cinetics home base in Austin. There are 44 parts in each set of CineSkates that are mostly made in the USA. A few parts are made in Germany and China.

  • The wheels have a ruler system marked around the perimeter, and a tic mark on the lower part of the bracket... http://cinetics.com/wp-content/themes/cinetics/images/misc/CineSkates-Image.jpg

These are for time-lapse. You set your camera to shoot a photo at incremental times, and after every shot move the wheel one tic mark (or whatever distance you chose). I put my lens cap as a stop in front of the wheel to keep it from rolling during the shot. I have a design for a more elegant wheel lock that will be a future accessory, but it works great now to just use an object like your lens cap. This is a manual method, and automated movement is a next step. A motorized wheel will be one of the next things we develop so that you can get time lapse shots automatically.

  • CineSkates perform best with cameras less than 5 pounds. I use it with a 1500+ gram (3.2 lbs) set-up most often. A DSLR, a reasonable size lens, and a mic generally work wonderfully. If you have concerns about weight, calculate the weight of your set up. If it is over 5 lbs, I can't recommend CineSkates.

  • Here is our plan...

    1. Have everything ready to go when the Kickstarter project ends on October 14th
    2. Send out the Kickstarter survey to collect addresses immediately after
    3. Sort addresses, print labels and ship everything

We're doing our best to have our processes in place to get everything out ASAP. I hate to promise anything when so much is unpredictable though. Everything should be sent out before the end of October.

  • Just pledge for the regular CineSkates System and add $20 for the Glif iPhone mount. We'll send out a survey to verify the gear you want right when the project ends.

  • Currently, they are only compatible with Focus. However, we are currently developing new attachments that will enable CineSkates to work with other tripods.

  • Yes! If you already own a ballhead, you don't need to buy a BallHead X. Ballheads that are small, lightweight and have a large range of motion work best with CineSkates.
