EIGHT HOUR DAY

Nathan Strandberg and Katie Kirk are the husband–and–wife duo that make up the small design firm known as, Eight Hour Day, a tongue-and-cheek moniker for a busy company. Formally based–in Minneapolis, they’re currently on a year long journey across America in hopes to seek inspiration and also continue to create new work for clients.

The more that I look at Eight Hour Day’s work though, the more amazed I am to see how only two people could create such a vast and diverse range of work; where the quite essential, interactive projects are just as compelling as the graphic illustration projects. This is not to say that these two worlds are separate though, one of the main reasons as to why I’ve gravitated towards their work over the years is because Nate and Katie do a really wonderful job of taking the illustrative imagery and implementing it into the more traditional design projects appropriately. I’ve also noticed that they’ve gotten even better at combining these two worlds as they become older and even more mature as a company.

The work is often vivid with color, bold and graphic with imagery, and sophisticated and well conceived in execution. But perhaps what element stands out the most to me in their work is the notion that one gets when they look at a compelling piece of artwork and it occurs to them, “why didn’t I think of that?” I ask this question often when I see Nathan and Katie’s work.
