Sooner Coaching Shake-Up?

John Hoover of the Tulsa World has the scoop on an eventful day for the coaching rumor mill in Norman.

First, it was OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson reportedly accepting the Louisiana Tech job, which was later filled by Arizona offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes.

Word also seeped out that Sooner quarterback coach Josh Heupel had interviewed to be the Minnesota Golden Gophers’ offensive coordinator. Bob Stoops shot that one down.

Now, however, comes a new report that should get the attention of OU fans: Wilson is a prime candidate for the job at East Carolina vacated by Skip Holtz.

Granted, these Pirates ain’t the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For a coordinator looking for his big break as a head coach, though, ECU seems like a pretty good starting point. As mid-majors go, it has a decent history of success. Also, Conference USA is probably the second strongest non-BCS league, behind the Mountain West. The Mid-Atlantic region offers a solid recruiting base, and the competition for talent probably isn’t as fierce as hotter hotbeds.

Lastly, the Broyles Award winner grew up in North Carolina and played for the Tar Heels.

Could Wilson do better? Maybe, so long as he’s willing to wait.

Wilson isn’t a spring chicken, though. Head coaching jobs on the D-I level for coordinators don’t come along that often, either. If offered, Homerism can’t see Wilson passing this chance up.

*Who would replace Wilson as offensive coordinator should he leave? I assume Stoops would give the job to wide receivers coach Jay Norvell, but I’m certainly not claiming any inside information here.
