While Auburn was out putting the hammer down on the Ole Miss Rebels last Saturday at the Grove, the Oregon Ducks were beating an even better squad in equally impressive fashion.
UO’s 53-32 thrashing of a good USC squad at the Coliseum should have answered any questions voters may have had about the Ducks on the road. Or about the Ducks in the primetime spotlight. Or about the Ducks’ undersized defense.
I decided to keep Auburn at No. 1 this week by means of the Tigers’ wins against LSU, Auburn, Mississippi St. and South Carolina. I put a little more stock in those victories than in Oregon’s quality wins – in my eyes – over Stanford and USC. However, in light of the impressive fashion in which Oregon has dispatched of its foes, the margin between the Ducks and Tigers at the top of the polls in razor thin.
*Close to home, Oklahoma’s resume took some hits this week with losses by Utah State, Air Force, Florida State, Cincinnati, Texas and Missouri.
*The winner of Utah-TCU on Saturday afternoon will have a strong claim on No. 1 next week, especially if TCU wins at Salt Lake City by a comfortable margin.
*Florida State’s tumble reflects the struggles of its opponents as much as its loss to North Carolina State. Virginia’s woodshedding of Miami makes the Seminoles’ best win look somewhat flimsy now.
*My Bloguin Heisman ballot: 1st – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn; 2nd – Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor; 3rd – LaMichael James, RB, Oregon.
