SDBC New Years Day Ride 2014

San Diego Bicycle Club
Report by SDBC ride leader, Michael Pelkey

Ralph Elliott was not able to attend & officiate this year, as is his usual for our First Ride of The Year, and he asked me to sit in for him in his absence.

We started out with everyone shouting out a nice, big, and loud “Happy New Year!” I mentioned that there was a lot going on for SDBC in 2014: with our new sponsor, a new green & black kit; a start-up of a Cat 1 & 2 Team; and that SDBC now offers rides on both Saturday and Sunday.

I briefly went over the day’s route and handed out some “Ralph” sheets with directions to those needing them. Weather was perfect and we had about 70 riders. Initially we kept together but eventually the long climb up Pomerado split the bunch--not untypical. We regrouped at Shell Station off I-15. After rest & nourishment we headed into Escondido all together with a trim 18 mph pace.

The amount of traffic lights limited our speed but when we hit Palomar Airport Rd we started to see some momentum picking up. Various people took pulls with, of course, 11 year old Alex, right on their wheels. This was the beginning of fast. Dig in, and hang on--hills and all!

In the SHARROW lane heading down the coast the speed increased and for sure by now the group was split. Through Encinitas and then past Swami’s, ever increasing. By the time we were on the run up to the hill the men & women with the fast legs took over and roared away up the hill to Java. At Java Depot our average speed was 18.8 mph. We pulled in at 11:40. We left at 8:40. Not bad, huh?

Another GREAT RIDE sponsored by SDBC and our First Ride of The Year!

According to Serge at Java Depot our average speed was 18.8 mph. We pulled in at 11:40. We left at 8:40. Not bad, huh?!

Thanks to all who participated and lent their expertise in making it so.

Happy New Year and see you next year!

SDBC Sunday Ride

San Diego Bicycle Club

“Sundays will never be the same”--Spanky & Our Gang

SDBC is hosting an ongoing Sunday ride leaving from UC Cyclery at 8:30 a.m. Once a month we may alter the route, riding a bit longer or possibly leaving from another location. Make sure to check SDBC Online Weekly as any change will always be posted.

An SDBC ride leader will lead the ride and participants are expected to:

  • Bring emergency contact information
  • Be familiar with group riding skills
  • Be able to maintain a D1 pace–approx 17 mph average
  • Adhere to safe riding habits
  • Assist in keeping group together

Camaraderie is the key! The ride will be about 40 miles, and arrive at our sponsor, Java Depot, in Solana Beach around 11:00 a.m. It is not a recreational ride, nor a no-drop ride, but we will assist in incidents as deemed prudent to the group.

Routes will contain hills (with regrouping as needed at the tops), faster sections with cornering, possible descents, and at least one brief rest/water stop before coffee shop. It will be challenging, but doable & fun--like a faster version of our D2 Ride.

Arrive at 8:15 for announcements, bring 2 bottles of fluid and be ready to roll at 8:30.

A group pic will be taken on each ride and will be sent to you afterwards with a ride write-up.

Looking forward to seeing you.

The Pactimo store is open. To access the Team Store from the club web site, click on Members, then SDBC Clothing, and follow the directions on the page. If this is the first time you have ordered clothing from Pactimo, you will need to create your personal account.

Please be sure of your sizing. Pactimo and SDBC are NOT responsible if you order the wrong size. Use the following link to access the Pactimo Custom Clothing sizing chart.

A Note On Pricing
The clothing committee worked very hard in negotiating prices with Pactimo. Despite almost across-the-board price increases on garments, we're keeping the prices of many popular items the same as last year. In cases where we have raised prices, we have kept the increase as small as possible.

Racers and Volunteers Needed for Boulevard Road Race

The UCSD Cycling Team is proud to announce the 2014 Boulevard Road Race. This is the largest and most successful race in the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference and also one of the largest in the entire country. The proceeds from this race almost entirely fund our race season and allow us to foster the talent of many collegiate cyclists.

We request that volunteers please notify Drew Lawyer (this years race director) at boulevardroadrace@gmail.com Remember that by volunteering, you are not just helping to make Boulevard run smoothly but are also giving back to the community by making a significant contribution to the UCSD Cycling Team's season and continued success.

If you plan to also race Boulevard, that is fantastic, and we are will accommodate that in your volunteer schedule so that you can do both. We will need volunteers at all times of the day, but the heaviest demand is in the early morning and morning while the collegiate fields are racing and many of our team mates will be kicking off their season.
Thanks

Drew Lawyer and the UCSD Cycling Team

I cut my teeth on this bike.  I went from a guy that could only ride 5 miles on a Saturday, to a multi-century rider, all on this bike.  Strong, sturdy aluminum construction that will not let you down.  The added triple crank (granny gear) is there if you need to climb some monster hills, but try not to use it - you'll get better the more you push yourself.
