Canon 5D Mark II used to shoot entire House season finale, director says it's 'the future'
May 17, folks. That's the date when the grumpy doctor you wish you were and the snazzy camera you wish you owned will join forces on American network television. The final episode in this season's run of House has been shot exclusively using Canon's 5D Mark II, and the show's director Greg Yaitanes has been taking questions about the experience on Twitter. PetaPixel have helpfully collated the Q&A session into a coherent pseudo-interview, which you'll be able to find at the source below. The major takeaway is that the crew liked the experience and didn't have to do an overwhelming amount of work to adapt to the different shooting method. Guess after SNL and its own movie, the 5D Mark II just had to go and do a guest appearance on its favorite TV show.

Naah, the future is RED Scarlet.
3K resolution, 120fps, RED Raw, Interchangeable lenses.
Less than 5k$.
@franchg
this is the present.. the future is 5d mark III..
@franchg Loving the final supper picture.
@franchg Neh, this puppy is the future:

@iLoveApple HAHAHA i didn't notice!
@iLoveApple Lost already did it. Copycats hehe
@franchg The Scarlet has a tiny sensor. Might as well shoot with one of the regular professional video cameras, the only advantage of the Scarlet is the interchangeable lens (but some video cameras should have that too), the higher resolution (which is pointless when producing for TV) and the RAW data. You won't get a cinematic look with it unless you use these 35mm adapter things which gives everything that cinematic depth of field. The 5D Mk II has a sensor that is even larger than that of the Red One.
@franchg The Red Scarlet is the Duke Nukem Forever of cameras.
We are talking about a 2-year marketing pre-launch. Back when the Scarlet was announced a 2/3" sensor was considered big, then these dSLRs started coming out with full-frame 35mm sensors that are even bigger then the $20K+ Red One.
Which is why they red-did their entire line-up to $10k+ setups that include S35 sensors. Either way this sub-$3k 5DMkII obviously has been used in House, SNL, and its been reported that even Harry Potter and Iron Man 2 are using these "cheap" 5D MarkII.

With the Panasonic's AFG100 coming in at ~$6k with a micro-43rd sensor (which is close to a super 35mm), the Scarlet missed their release sweet-spot.
Go to RedUser board, you see how sensitive Jannard is to people mentioning these new rivals, and complaining about how people mentioning that the Scarlet will take 3-years between the time they announced it and the time they will actually release it.
@franchg Just wait 6 months and Nikon will hit back as they usually do... Canon and Nikon don't release their products at the same time with same specs - they always jump over each other by slight margin
Just watch: Canon 5D Mark II gets knocked down by New Super Cool Nikon D666 S Moses IV
@metalhaze "Lost already did it. Copycats hehe"
and Battlestar Galactica did it before Lost..........
@dachips
5D mark II came out a year and a half ago, and Nikon still hasn't improved on the D90's specs. Think that margin's a bit wider than you think.
@iLoveApple
It's known as "The LAST Supper" by the rest of the world since the 15th century or earlier knucklehead. I'm not sure if the Apple Dumpling Gang has ever heard of a man named Leonardo DaVinci.
@Malkmus They are about to improve the D600 to D600s with 1080p 24 fps
I shoot nikon, and man, do I envy
@phantazm I’m not a pro or semi-pro but saw some videos on youtube with Nikon and they were not that bad either, I'm just happy with my d300s
@phantazm
Nikon is not a bad brand it is just more expensive than Canon and Panasonic.
the future is 3DHD-DS!
@IceTheGreat
Don't you mean the 3DHD-DSi XL?
@m4192 ssshhh they're not suppose to know about the revison!
Is it really better than the usual cameras they use?
Or is it just a promo stunt.. ?
@Neosubu Yeah, you just ask yourself, "why?".
@Neosubu
I can't imagine how much Canon is paying people to use their camera and tell people about it.
I guess the plus for people is that they are getting good prosumer quality in a camera setup that may only cost them about $3k, instead of having to spend $6-9k.
I just hope that House filmed this with the firmware update that allowed 24p instead of 30 because that always drives me nuts (unless the scene calls for it). To me, it's almost as bad as turning on the "overdrive/smoothing" feature in an HDTV, which makes me want to barf.
@jivetrky
US TV displays at 29.97fps. 24fps is for film. The directory did say they recorded it at 24fps, though, which is puzzling.
Considering the huge budget that TV filming tends to have for things I would wonder why choose a cheaper camera at all. Maybe it's because they think people like the edgy look that movable, jerked-around cameras can bring. Dunno.
@Tumbleweed
I'm pretty sure modern NTSC TVs can display 24p material. Espcially HDTVs...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24p
@Neosubu it's probably about equal. but last I checked very few tv shows shoot digital and even then it's monster sized cameras. very heavy and expensive cameras.
so this is a test of sorts to see if a camera on a basic tripod can look as good. and remember this is a camera that was designed for still photography first and video second.
We'll see in a few weeks what the results are.
going to see a lot of 2.8
Cutty is so hot :3
@spsfinest She has a man jaw, but I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating Cheetos.
@JackNapier !!VIRGIN ALERT!!
You really think Cuddy's hot? Man, to each their own, I guess....
@JackNapier Yes, she does...but the rest of her, OMG!
@One Love
You can bounce a quarter off that buttocks.
Its a damn fine camera. No doubt about that.
But use it strictly for recording purposes?
So you have to wonder, why isn't The Amazing Race shot in HD, or even just WS???
@jubjub
Exactly! Amazing Race NEEDS to go HD already!
Guess the recession is worth than we thought huh?
@SNESimon *Worse
Engadget when are you gonna get with the program and add an edit button so I stop looking like aa idiot?
@SNESimon
It would take more than an edit button to fix that!
*ZING*
@vman81
I knew that was coming....... :)
@SNESimon
shouldn't type with your mouth full...
@vman81
Eh, its just a Freudian slip. You know, where you mean one thing but say a mother...
@vanmankline
Eye sea what ewe did their
future ends on 12-12-12 or global warming*
*which ever is late. terms & conditions apply.
i have far too many nikkor lens for me to switch. hopefully, nikon can join the party sooner than latter. nikon is due for consumer & prosumer dslr later this year,
@benderfender
In the end, it's all about the glass and person behind the camera, anyways. A person with no sense of what makes an interesting shot with a $1,000,000 camera is still taking worthless photos.
@(Unverified) true
I LOVED this episode :D!! Taub and Omar Epps tripping out together was great fun...
My fav line:
Dying Old Geezer "What time is it....?"
House "Uh...T minus 4 hours"
@Wesscoast
Seriously..?...you guys are talking about the Camera?
@Wesscoast Yeah, I think this was my favourite episode of the season so far.
And why does 13 have such a pretty face?
@Wesscoast
Umm..."this" episode will be aired on May 17th. Yesterday's episode was not shot with the 5D Mark II.
