2014 Barrio Logan Grand Prix

San Diego Bicycle Club
Race Directors Report
From Ralph Elliot

The 18th annual Morgan Gold Barrio Logan Grand Prix, presented by General Dynamics NASSCO and the Port of San Diego may have started a few minutes late but that didn't stop it from being a great success. This event helps raise money for the Logan Heights Family Health Center and we are pleased to announce that once again we were able to make a contribution to the community.

In the first event of the day SDBC racer Jeremy Schaefer won the Men Cat 5 race. Jeremy Schaefer crossing the line - Click for larger image.

We had many of our SDBC racers rise to the occasion with results in the top ten and 8 podium finishes including 6 from the juniors. The Community Youth Races held mid-day were fun for everyone. The young racers had a blast battling it out and they received free helmets just for showing up. Click to visit sponsor's site in new window

SDBC extends our thanks to all that participated and we hope you had a great day!

This event requires an enormous amount of support from sponsors and volunteers throughout the day and SDBC would like to thank everyone that helped out.

“Remember it's not whether you win or lose, but it's how much fun you have!”

So start planning now for next year to have some fun at “Bikes in the Barrio, Cinco De Mayo, 2015 Weekend“.

See ya at the races!

Bea Dormoy Dana Point Update

San Diego Bicycle Club
SDBC Women's team director, Beatrice Dormoy, was one of the 5 injured cyclists in the Women 1/2/3/4 race at Dana Point Grand Prix last Sunday.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said the riders crashed about 1:30 p.m., getting tangled up just 100 feet from the finish line. Beatrice sustained a concussion, 2 fractured neck vertebrae, stitches under her eye, facial, shoulder injuries, and all over bruises and abrasions. Fortunately, she expects a full recovery, however she will need to wear a neck brace for the next 4 weeks and rest.

Please keep Bea in your thoughts and prayers for speedy healing.

June 7, 2014

It's been a couple of years since we had a club photo so we plan to accomplish this on June 7th. Wear the club kit for this year to participate in the photo shoot.

We would like to have as many members as possible in the photo. This is important when reaching out to potential sponsors so mark your calendar and be prepared to bring your brightest smiles.

The Pactimo store is open. To access the Team Store from the club web site, click on Members, then SDBC Clothing, and follow the directions on the page. If this is the first time you have ordered clothing from Pactimo, you will need to create your personal account.

Please be sure of your sizing. Pactimo and SDBC are NOT responsible if you order the wrong size. Use the following link to access the Pactimo Custom Clothing sizing chart.

A Note On Pricing
The clothing committee worked very hard in negotiating prices with Pactimo. Despite almost across-the-board price increases on garments, we're keeping the prices of many popular items the same as last year. In cases where we have raised prices, we have kept the increase as small as possible.

Bike To Work Day, Friday May 16

Bike To Work Day Web Si

Do you ride to work? SDBC Clothing Director and club racer Nick Jones does.

“2,160 miles riding to work so far this year. Gas saved around 700 dollars. Encinitas to Rancho Bernardo is my commute and I love every minute of it. My challenge to you all is how far is your commute and is it possible to ride your bike once a week, month, year. Every little bit helps! Oh yeah, it's good exercise too.”

Will you meet Nick's challenge?

Bike commuting makes good time-saving sense for training. For example, if it takes you 20 minutes to drive to work, and 40 minutes to ride, you're effectively getting a 40 minute ride for the "time cost" of 20 minutes. That is, you'd be leaving at, say, 8:00 instead of 8:20, just 20 minutes earlier, to get a 40 minute ride and still get to work by 8:40.

Dealing with traffic while bike commuting can be more difficult and stressful than on a regular/training ride, because you don't have as much flexibility in choosing a route that avoids challenging traffic situations. To help with that, the Bike Coalition offer classes that teach practices and techniques that can tame almost any situation. Some of it is counter-intuitive to even some of the most seasoned riders (e.g.: when in doubt, take the lane). Or I can recommend some books. Let me know.

Friday May 16 is Bike to Work Day. For more information, including how to sign up and find out where the pit stops are, start with the Bike Coalition Bike Month page:

See you on the road on your way to work!

For Sale: Ay-up Complete Lighting System

Click for larger image Click for larger image

I am selling my Ay-Up complete lighting system because I got a new kit for a gift. I used these lights for night MTB rides. They provide plenty of light to have a wonderful night ride. The light is bright and clear. You can read about Ay-Up lights here:

These lights are also very good for road riding commuters. The kit has tons of stuff. 3 batteries for all occasions, chargers (including car), mounts and etc. The kits retail for $380+shipping brand new. The batteries last a long time. I've never had my lights run out of juice on a night ride. $150 is the price so don't send me messages with other offers. The lights are guaranteed for life and practically indestructible.
