A Note From the President

Dear SDBC Member,

The Club is in the process of converting to a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) entity. As a tax-exempt, sponsors will be able to deduct contributions to the Club as charitable deductions. This should enhance our ability to obtain more corporate sponsors.

To affect this change, the state of California requires that we amend our Articles of Incorporation with the following changes:

  1. Expressly state that we will not engage in any activity that is not permitted under IRS rules pertaining to 501(c)(3) entities,
  2. Upon dissolution of the Club, all assets will be distributed only to another tax-exempt entity, and
  3. Both the Board and the Members have approved these changes.

The restated Articles of Incorporation that we propose to adopt can be viewed by clicking the following link - Restated Articles of Incorporation.

Voting by secret ballot will be this Saturday, September 12, before the Saturday ride at UC Cyclery. SDBC Secretary Adina Cowell, and SDBC Membership Director Marilyn Detloff will oversee the balloting.

Thank you,

Jim Swigart
President
San Diego Bicycle Club

16th Annual Cecy Krone Memorial Ride
SDBC Logo

Great rider turnout!
Cecy Krone Memmorial Montage

Another wonderful SDBC sponsored group event, this time in memory of SDBC member Cecy Krone, and all other riders unfortunately killed by drunk drivers. As usual, long-time member and past president of SDBC, Ralph Elliott was there at the start at UC Cyclery emceeing the event. He had route sheets for those that weren't sure the coast would be on the left going up and on the right coming back and he passed out red ribbons from MADD to be affixed to each riders bike in memory of Cecy and all those riders killed or seriously injured by drunk drivers. In his announcement, he mentioned that with more cyclists on the road there is unfortunately an increasing number of cyclists killed each year in SD by drunk drivers. He expanded that theme with mention of current day additional causes of accidents, the use of cell phones and texting while driving.

Before we rolled out Ralph stressed the importance of riding safely together, and staying together, at least up to Carlsbad, where some would choose to head back down the coast and others to continue on through Les' Loop before meeting up at SDBC coffee shop sponsor, Java Depot in Solana Beach, for a free drink, compliments of SDBC. "It's not a race, he said. We are here in memory of those killed by drunk drivers. Please cooperate and assist in keeping the ride together, obeying traffic rules, and riding in the right lane only."

Rolling out en masse, Serge Issakov got a count of 100 riders. We went over Torrey Pines hill heading up the coast, with our first regroup in Del Mar, then proceeded in orderly fashion up to Magee Park, where we were met by Ralph, who had ridden up on his bike from Java Depot. The park has water fountains and restrooms, and after a short break, Ralph announced that the riders doing Les' Loop would leave first followed by those heading down the coast shortly thereafter.

Carrying on into Les' loop went well, with several groups eventually forming - that part of the ride participants rode a bit faster!

The group that headed back down the coast rode the entire length together at conversational pace.

At Java Depot we were all treated to the as mentioned free drink compliments of SDBC, and after a short break, riders dispersed and rode back down the coast to UC Cyclery.

Thanks to all who participated!
