Amgen Tour of California Route Unveiling

Posted: 10/29/2015

The 2016 Amgen Tour of California preliminary routes were announced on Thursday, 10/22, at a function on the patio facing the harbor at Coasterra Restaurant on Harbor Island. It was a well-planned event that featured a number of notable speakers including Mayor Kevin Faulkner, himself an avid cyclist; the Mayor’s of Imperial Beach, and south Pasadena; former NBA All-Star Bill--“I love my bike”--Walton; and just retired pro cyclist, ‘Fast’ Freddie Rodriquez.

There were probably 50-60 cyclists in attendance, CycloVets and Swamis figuring prominently, with Tony Lowery and I the only SDBC members. Local news covered the event, and after the presentation of the routes, the guest speakers shared their input, most touting the wonders of America’s greatest city, San Diego, in the America’s greatest state, California. Former TOC rider Freddie Rodriquez was asked to comment about each of the eight stages, and Bill Walton started and finished his speech with the clause “I love my bike,” and must have repeated it at least twice more during it. What a guy!

This year the TOC route will go from south to north beginning in San Diego on May 15 with a ride starting in Mission Bay, that will likely go out Otay Lakes Rd and up Honey Springs Rd. This is not official. There will be more information released as the featured cities’ routes are planned out. The other host cities in order are South Pasadena, Thousand Oaks, Morro Bay, Lodi, Folsom, Santa Rosa, and Sacramento.

The TOC also includes an opportune four-day/four-stage Women’s race from May 19-22, as part of the first-ever UCI Women’s World Tour, “a series of of one-day and multi-stage races running from March to October across Europe, China, and the U.S.”

Tony and I said hello to, or met for the first time, a number of remarkable people there: Richard Bryne, inventor of Speedplay pedals, manufactured in SD (I didn’t know that); local cycling legend John Howard; Mike Olson, owner of Trek Superstore; Jinna, of Thomas Bike Shop in South Park; and, as previously mentioned, Bill Walton and Freddy Rodriquez.

Afterwards, many of us chose to accompany Bill and Freddie on a ride down the harbor to the Convention Center, and then up 5th Ave for a short ways before heading back to Harbor Island.

I was glad to have been able to participate, as was Tony, and the excitement generated was electric. 2016 is going to be another great Tour of California!
