Here are three outstanding examples of our 100th Annual Conference confirmed speakers:
Captain Gregory G. Stump, U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco
Captain Stump assumed command in San Francisco after serving as Deputy Commander of Sector Puget Sound in Seattle.  He previously served at the Pentagon in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, as Deputy Operations Officer for the Deployable Operations Group, as Chief of Response at Sector New Orleans, as Chief of Leadership and Professional Development at Coast Guard HQ, as Commander of Tactical Law Enforcement Team Gulf, as Assistant Operations Officer at Activities New York, and at the Aviation Training Center in Alabama.  He holds a Civil Engineering degree from Virginia Military Institute, a Master of Public Administration from Baruch College, a Master of Business Administration from Boston University, a Master of National Security & Strategic Studies from Naval War College, and a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from San Diego University.

Susan Shey Dvonch, Principal, Shey-Harding Associates, Inc.

Sue brings a wide range of search and succession planning experience  including customer relations, recruitment, sales, marketing and training.  She is a graduate of Boston College with a degree in education, worked as an admissions officer at a major Los Angeles university, and worked in corporate training and marketing.  Since 1990, Shey-Harding Associates has offered human resources solutions to help meet the ever-changing needs of successful organizations.  They believe that recruiting and retaining top employees is a key to the long-term success of any organization and they offer extensive industry knowledge and work in partnership with clients to ensure they receive ethical, discreet, and confidential services.

Austin Becker, Stanford University's Sustainability Science Research Lab

Austin works across the disciplines of policy, engineering, and climate-change science.  Before coming to Stanford, he worked for Rhode Island Sea Grant and the Coastal Resources Center on urban working waterfronts and ports, marine-based recreation and tourism, and coastal environmental issues.  He analyzed maritime geo-spatial data to create policy solutions to address conflicting demands for limited waterfront.  Austin's previous career was captaining schooners and tall ships throughout the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.  He returned to the University of Rhode Island for graduate school in 2005, earning a Master of Marine Affairs and Master of Environmental Science and Management.

In addition to informative presentations, our 100th Annual Conference will feature excellent networking opportunities such as discounted golf at Crystal Springs Golf Course in nearby Burlingame, California.  Designed by British architect, W. Herbert Fowler, this golf course lies majestically within a 32,000 acre wildlife refuge.  Crystal Springs Golf Course offers panoramic views of the 20-mile-long Crystal Springs Reservoir, an abundance of wildlife, and a challenging, championship caliber course.  The classic 6,515 yard, 18-hole, par 72 layout meanders along the natural contours of the valley and offers a challenge to any level golfer looking for the best that San Francisco golf has to offer.

Companions will also be treated to two special companion-only activities: tours of the amazing Thomas Fogarty Winery & Vineyards and of the historic Filoli country house set in 16 acres of formal gardens surrounded by 654 acres.

APP welcomes new associate member Manson Construction!
Manson is one of America's leading heavy civil marine construction and dredging companies.  Established in 1905, Manson began as a small, family-owned Puget Sound marine pile driving business.  Today, Manson thrives as a 100% employee-owned company with a second, third, and even fourth generation workforce.  Their fleet of heavy marine construction and dredging equipment includes 60 specialized vessels and over 50 barges.  Their headquarters remain in Seattle, though they have expanded to include permanent facilities in Northern and Southern California, Louisiana, and Florida.

For question, please visit their website at or contact Vice President Daniel Hussin at or 904-285-9211.

Welcome to APP, Manson Construction Company!

The Port of Astoria, Oregon USA recently welcomed three new commissioners elected on May 21st:  Commissioners-elect James Campbell, Stephen Fulton, and Richard Gerttula.
Campbell defeated incumbent Larry Pfund, who has served on the commission for 12 years.  Fulton and Gerttula won seats vacated by longtime commissioners Floyd Holcom and Dan Hess.  Campbell owns Campbell Towing and Marine Construction.  Fulton specializes in land development and wetland mitigation at Warrenton Fiber Company, a forest products processor.  Gerttula is owner and principal of PR Marine Support Services and former general manager at Foss Environmental.

The three new commissioners will join current Port of Astoria Commissioners Bill Hunsinger and Jack Bland.

Congrats, Commissioners Campbell, Fulton, and Gerttula!  Thanks for your service, Commissioners Hess, Holcom, and Pfund!

Upriver in Eastern Oregon, voters re-elected Commissioners Jerry Simpson and John Turner at the Port of Umatilla, Oregon USA.  The two re-elected commissioners will continue serving with Commissioners Kurt Bendixsen, Tim Mabry, and Marge Roff.

Congratulations, Commissioners Simpson and Turner!

To improve the competitiveness of the Port of Kaohsiung, TIPC amid intense competition, the Taiwan International Ports Corporation has decided to expand Terminal 4 of at the Port of Kaohsiung.  The project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and be completed in 2018.

The total project cost is NT$14.311 billion (about $478 million US dollars), including NT$3.8 billion from the government and NT$10.511 billion from local private investment.

When the expansion is completed, the expected annual container handling volume will add an additional 611,000 TEU.

The Port of Longview, Washington USA's  annual report numbers show another operating revenue increase (for the fifth consecutive year). The strong showing from 2012 has elevated Longview to Washington's third largest port by operating revenue, only behind the Port of Tacoma and the Port of Seattle.

"We're very proud of what we accomplished with the help of our customers, labor force, and strategic partners in 2012," said the Port's Chief Executive Officer Geir Kalhagen.  While much of the boost in both revenue and tonnage can be attributed to the new grain facility, additional growth was spurred by calcined coke, logs, and wind energy cargo helping drive more business through the Port and more jobs into the region.
Robert Levy has been confirmed by the Oregon State Senate as the newest Port of Portland, Oregon USA commissioner.
Levy operates both the Windy River and L&L Farms in Hermiston, Oregon and was previously owner of American Onion Inc., a food products wholesale company.  He previously served on the Oregon Board of Agriculture.
"During my business career as a farmer and rancher, I have been involved in importing and exporting a number of agricultural products through the port's facilities and understand what an important role the port plays in our state and the region," Levy said.  "I look forward to representing those interests and the interests of all Oregonians on the Commission."
Port of Portland commissioners are unpaid volunteers appointed by the governor of Oregon and confirmed by the state Senate.  Levy replaces Commissioner Steve Corey, who had served on the Commission since 2003 and whose current term has expired.
Congratulations, Commissioner Levy!  Thanks for your faithful service, Commissioner Corey!
