100TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE: EMBARKING ON OUR NEXT 100 YEARS

Delegates from ports and port-related businesses throughout the Pacific joined together in Redwood City on August 4-7th and were educated by a diverse lineup of informative expert speakers at APP's 100th Annual Conference, graciously hosted by the Port of Redwood City. 

 

Under the conference theme "Embarking on our Next 100 Years," delegates discussed recent successes and challenges at ports and built stronger partnerships with port leaders throughout the Pacific. The event was filled with valuable port-industry briefings, excellent networking opportunities, entertaining events, an informative tour of the Bay area's commercial harbors, a look at the America's Cup Village, and a special 100th anniversary dinner gala to celebrate APP's first century.

Pedersen Planning Consultants (PPC) is a firm that provides a wide variety of regional and community planning services. Currently based in Colorado, PPC was formed in 1986 and has served a variety of federal, state, county and local agencies, utilities, consulting engineering firms, and private corporations in Wyoming, Colorado, Hawaii, Alaska, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. PPC has extensive planning experience and has completed numerous plans and studies including regional infrastructure and transportation plans, municipal master plans, economic development plans and feasibility studies, housing and land use assessments, recreational master plans, community and social service assessments, natural resource management plans, environmental impact assessments, and site and facility plans. 

 

PPC's partners are Jim and Sandy Pedersen, who actively manage all projects and administrative affairs. Jim Pedersen, principal planner of the firm, has 42 years of domestic and international planning experience and manages all projects. Sandy Pedersen, senior planner, has 27 years of domestic and international planning experience, participates in all technical projects, and is PPC's administrative manager.

 

Pedersen Planning Consultants is currently participating in the preparation of a master plan for the Port of Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands. The firm is part of an interdisciplinary team organized by Lyon Associates in Honolulu which has been retained by the Republic of the Marshall Islands Ports Authority to complete the master plan.

APP PEOPLE: KASTROP BECOMES FIRST WOMAN CHAIR AT PORT OF REDWOOD CITY

 

Lorianna Kastrop has been elected as chair of the Redwood City, California USA port commission, the first woman to hold the position in the Port's 76-year history.

 

In June 2008, she was the second woman in history appointed to the Port of Redwood City Commission. The first was Marguerite Leipzig, in the early 1980s, after having served on the Redwood City Council, including two years as mayor. Kastrop was reappointed to the Port Commission in 2012.

 

Kastrop is vice president and controller of The Kastrop Group, Inc. architectural firm, of which her husband, Michael, is principal architect. She has long been active in Redwood City. She was a member of the Redwood City Elementary School Board from 1997 to 2001, during which she received a Master of Boardsmanship award from the California School Boards Association.

 

She is a founding member and past president of the Redwood City Mothers Club. She is a past president of the Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Club. She has been active in the Redwood City-San Mateo County Chamber of Commerce for many years, and in 2001 was named that organization's Athena Businesswoman of the Year.   

 

She is a board member of Stanford Professional Women and she earned a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University in 1982.

 

Lorianna has a strong connection to San Francisco Bay. She is a recreational boater and yacht racer who has crewed in hundreds of races on the Bay. She and her husband race their Catalina 30 sailboat named "Goose." She is a staff commodore of the South Beach Yacht Club, located adjacent to AT&T Baseball Park in San Francisco.

 

She succeeds Dick Dodge as chair. Commissioner Tom Cronin was elected vice-chair and Commissioner Ralph Garcia secretary.

 

APP PEOPLE: LISA POMASL BECOMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HUNT BEGINS NEW JOB  

The APP Board of Directors last month unanimously approved Lisa Pomasl as the new APP Executive Director. Previous executive director Dave Hunt stepped down on September 1st.

Lisa previously served as deputy director of APP and the Columbia River Channel Coalition since 2006. She has over 20 years of diverse experience in the maritime industry with a strong background in non-profit maritime related association management. In addition to the eight years serving as both APP's and the Columbia River Channel Coalition's (CRCC) deputy director, she served seven years at the Merchants Exchange of Portland managing several associations: Columbia River Shippers Association, Columbia River Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association, Portland Shipping Club, Maritime Information Services of North America, and the Merchants Exchange Grain Committee.  Prior to her seven-year experience there, she began her career in the maritime field managing import and export container traffic at Hyundai America Shipping Agency (P.N.) for six years. Lisa served for eight years on the Women's Shipping Club of Portland's Board of Directors in the roles of Membership Chair, Newsletter Editor, Vice-President, and she led the Club as their 50th President from 2007-2008.

After eight years serving APP, former executive director Dave Hunt decided to take on a new role as Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition, an association of 150 defense and security industry businesses. Dave also recently completed his fifth and final term in the Oregon House of Representatives, where he served as Speaker of the House.
