TWO SPOTS FOR NOVEMBER 16 RAIL SEMINAR

Because of limited space, we can accomodate just two more participants for this Friday's Fly-in Fly-out Seminar -- "Effective Rail Connections for Ports" -- hosted and sponsored by the Port of Portland at the Portland International Airport (PDX) Conference Center on Friday, November 16, 2012.

The seminar begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:00 p.m. -- right in the airport conference center -- so you can easily drive or fly in and out of Portland that same day.

 

An optional 90-minute free tour of the Port of Portland's rail and marine facilities will also be offered immediately after the Seminar at 3:00 p.m.

    Dr. Paul Brewbaker is an expert on the economy and financial risk analytics.  Known for his humor and forays into economic theories, he is a frequent TV presence and popular business conference speaker.  Paul had a 25-year career with the Bank of Hawaii, where he served as senior vice president and chief economist.  He is a graduate of Stanford University and received his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii.  He has taught at the University of Wisconsin and in the University of Hawaii system.  He is a member of the American Finance Association, the National Association for Business Economics, and is a director of the Hawaii Economic Association.  Paul owns TZ Economics.

      

    Kristopher English is Business Development Manager for Xanatos Marine Ltd. based in North Vancouver, BC Canada.  Kris has worked for Xanatos since 2001 and has been involved in projects ranging from small VTS installation for ports to full Coastal Monitoring Systems for National Security.  Kris specializes in customizing Maritime Domain Awareness solutions for all sizes of ports as well as AtoN AIS monitoring systems.  Kris studied business at the University of British Columbia while on a basketball scholarship and worked abroad on ships for five years.  


    Tom Spear is a partner at Schrader Company Sales LLC based in Seattle, Washington USA.  Tom has a 25-year sales and marketing background and his experience ranges from working for the Government of Bermuda to selling Russian Sidecar Motorcycles.  The Schrader Company represents and works for seven major manufacturers of industrial marine products -- from safe berthing and fendering systems to piling and pile restoration systems.  The Schrader Company is a unique firm that prides itself on its long-term relationships with both engineering and contracting firms to provide a valued consulting role in marine projects up and down the West Coast of North America.

    SAN DIEGO PORT COMMISSIONER LEADS IN CONGRESSIONAL RACE VOTE
    With some absentee and provisional ballots still remaining to be counted, Scott Peters, one of seven members of the Port of San Diego, California USA's Board of Commissioners, is leading the race to represent California's 52nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

    According to San Diego County election officials, Peters currently has 118,476 votes over incumbent Congressman Brian Bilbray's 116,577 votes.  The 52nd Congressional District includes north and eastern portions of San Diego County.

    Peters has been a member of the port commission since January 2009, including service as chair in 2011.  Previously, Peters spent eight years on the San Diego City Council from 2000-2008 and was Council President during 2006-2008.
     
    If Peters is confirmed as the winner of the Congressional race, San Diego's mayor would appoint his replacement to the port commission.
    SELF-UNLOADING SHIP CALLS REDWOOD CITY
    Employing the latest leading edge technology, a new bulk ship, the MV Rt. Hon. Paul E. Martin, made its first voyage to the Port of Redwood City, California USA on November 6.  Named after Canada's twenty-first Prime Minister and former owner of the CSL Group, owners/operators of the new ship, she brought 25,000 tons of construction aggregates from British Columbia.

    The material was delivered to Cemex Aggregates, a major Port tenant. It will be used to make ready mix concrete at Cemex's plants throughout the Peninsula/Silicon Valley region.  Cemex last year imported more than 800,000 tons of this essential construction material through the Port and is forecasting to import more than 1 million tons this year. 

    The new VFD-driver self-unloader system allows for soft starting and has the ability to precisely adjust unloading rates to meet customer demands.
