libparadeBoth the Marshall Islands and Guam have annual Liberation Day celebrations to commemorate freedom from Japan's occupation during World War II.  Our Annual Conference is scheduled to coincide with Guam's festivities on July 21st.  The Port Authority of Guam has invited delegates and companions to join their staff and families to watch the parade and enjoy lunch in a private area on port property.  We will then depart via boat for tours of both commercial and recreational harbors followed by some cultural sightseeing.  It should be a day to remember!

Under our Annual Conference theme "Pacific Blue Continent Connections," you'll hear from expert speakers including:

Ken O'Hollaren, Executive Director of the Port of Longview, Washington USA since 1988.  Prior to joining the Port of Longview in 1980, Ken worked as Operations Manager for Overseas Shipping Company and Evergreen Line.  Ken is a past AAPA Chairman as well as President of the Columbia River Channel Coalition, a multi-state coalition of ports and industry that successfully deepened the Columbia River navigation channel.  He earned his BA from the University of Oregon in Political Science and Latin American Studies and his MBA from the University of Portland.

Soybean farmers, rail CEOs, construction workers, longshore workers, and community leaders recently joined the commissioners and staff from the Port of Grays Harbor, Washington USA to officially open the AGP Storage Facility at the Port's Terminal 2.  This new facility allows the USA's largest soybean meal cooperative to expand exports to Pacific Rim markets.

"Grays Harbor's waterfront is the workplace of thousands in Grays Harbor, from our longshore and port workers on the docks, to our commercial fishermen, seafood processors, oyster growers, and tourism businesses," said Chuck Caldwell, PGH Commission President.

Congratulations, Port of Grays Harbor!

Civic, industry, and Port of Long Beach, California USA leaders just launched a pioneering project to build a highly advanced terminal that will feature the most modern and clean technologies available to move cargo.

Last month, the Port, Orient Overseas Container Line, and Long Beach Container Terminal LLC committed to a 40-year, $4.6 billion agreement under which the Port will lease to OOCL and LBCT the redeveloped terminal. Construction on the project started in 2011.

"OOCL and the Port of Long Beach have enjoyed a fruitful business relationship for many years, and we look forward to many more years thanks to this new long-term pact," said Harbor Commission President Susan Anderson Wise. "We're building the Port of the Future here in Long Beach, and we are extremely pleased to know that OOCL and LBCT will be our partners in that future."

The Middle Harbor modernization project is combining two older facilities, LBCT's existing terminal and a nearby vacated facility, into one container terminal that will generate 14,000 new, permanent jobs and reduce air pollution by half even as trade could more than double. As the project progresses, Long Beach Container Terminal - the local subsidiary of OOCL - will expand from its current 90-acre facility to the new, 304-acre terminal with the ability to berth the largest, most modern ships. It will be one of the world's most technologically advanced and greenest terminals.

Congratulations, Port of Long Beach!
