latte

Join us for the welcome dinner reception at the Latte of Freedom, a 65-foot tall, latte stone-shaped concrete structure.  The Latte of Freedom opened in 2010 after 35 years of planning.  "Just as the Statue of Liberty lights America's gateway of freedom and opportunity on its eastern shores, this gift would be America's western beacon to those who yearned for the promise of opportunity that is America," Governor Bordallo said.

libparadeBoth the Marshall Islands and Guam have annual Liberation Day celebrations to commemorate freedom from Japan's occupation during World War II.  Our annual conference is scheduled to coincide with Guam's festivities on July 21st.  The Port Authority of Guam has invited delegates and companions to join their staff and families to watch the parade and enjoy lunch in a private area on port property.  We will then depart via boat for tours of two harbors followed by some cultural sightseeing.  It should be a day to remember!

LONGVIEW'S O'HOLLAREN WINS 'OLD SALT' AWARD

The Maritime Commerce Club of the Columbia River recently announced that Ken O'Hollaren, long-time Executive Director of the Port of Longview, Washington USA is the 2012 recipient of the "Old Salt" award.

This award is presented each year to someone who, through longevity and service, has advanced the Willamette and Columbia River maritime industry.  Nominees should be contributors to the maritime community and have made a significant effort to progress the industry outside of their regular job activities.  The honor was celebrated at the club's Winter Event Dinner on February 21st.

Late last year, O' Hollaren announced his retirement date for December 2012 after 25 years as the port's top executive.  He is currently the longest-serving executive director among Washington State's 76 port districts.

Congratulations, Ken!

PORTLAND WELCOMES NEW CONTAINER LINE

Container ship "Cap Cleveland" called on the Port of Portland, Oregon USA last week, the first call for German carrier Hamburg Süd.  Adding the carrier to Portland's international container lineup is part of a newly expanded weekly service to the Mediterranean offered in partnership with Hapag-Lloyd.

Officials presented a plaque commemorating the occasion and longshore workers discharged imports and loaded export containers all day before the ship departed the Columbia River bound for ports in Central and South America and continuing on to Africa and Europe.

"This is a big deal - especially for exporters in Oregon and throughout our region," said John Akre, Port of Portland terminal manager.  "This first ship represents a more frequent weekly service that will connect the Pacific NW and the Mediterranean with direct access to new ports in overseas markets."

The addition of Hamburg Süd ships adds capacity while reaching new ports overseas through direct and feeder connections including the Far East, Middle East, Indian Ocean, Latin America and West Africa.  By bringing more ships to Portland and improving the regularity of the calls, the service will provide a more efficient, dependable and competitive option for shippers utilizing the Port.
