Our recent Fly-In, Fly-Out Seminar, "Land Use at Pacific Ports: Balancing Trade, Industrial, and Community Needs," was packed full of valuable information on land use and real estate issues facing Pacific ports. With ports of all sizes controlling real estate near municipalities, attendees learned how to balance their port's traditional trade and transportation needs with the modern pressures of the surrounding community's needs and adjoining land uses, how to maximize the value of port real estate, how to properly develop and manage properties, and when it makes sense to work with municipalities for revenue generation of non-traditional port uses for both short and long term.

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP CHANGES AT
PORT OF LONG BEACH

 

The Port of Long Beach, California USA Board of Harbor Commissioners recently filled numerous key positions in executive leadership with four appointments to oversee Port operations.

Previous Acting Deputy Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer Noel Hacegaba, who has attended numerous APP events, is now the new Managing Director of Commercial Operations/Chief Commercial Officer. Hacegaba, who will oversee the new Commercial Operations Bureau, will be the main liaison to port customers. The bureau includes Business Development, Security Services, Tenant Services and Operations divisions. Before being appointed to acting deputy executive director in 2013, Hacegaba served as the executive officer to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners since 2010.

Duane Kenagy has been appointed to the newly created position of Capital Programs Executive to oversee the Port's capital improvement program and will report directly to the Chief Executive.

 

Also appointed to a newly created engineering leadership position is Diane Pierson, the new Director of Project Controls.

 

Betsy Christie, who recently served as Chief Financial Officer for container terminal company NYK Terminals from 2008 to 2013, has been appointed the new Director of Finance for the Port of Long Beach. 

 

Acting Assistant Managing Director of Engineering/Chief Harbor Engineer Sean Gamette will take on the role of Senior Director of Program Delivery/Chief Harbor Engineer.

Roger Wu, who was manager of Commercial Trade - Ocean Carriers, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Business Development, a new position. Wu has been with the Port of Long Beach since 2007, when he was hired as a marketing manager.

Senior Port Leasing Officer Eamonn Killeen is the new Assistant Director of Real Estate. Killeen, who began working with the port in 2002, replaces retiring Gail Wasil.

APP PEOPLE: KNIGHT BEGINS WORK AS NEW PORT OF ASTORIA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Port of Astoria, Oregon USA recently welcomed its new executive director, Jim Knight, to his new job. Knight met with staff and his Port customers to learn the issues at hand. He previously served as terminal manager for eight years at the Port of Olympia, Washington USA.

PORT OF BELLINGHAM CLOSE TO DEVELOPMENT DEAL WITH IRISH COMPANY

The Port of Bellingham, Washington USA is close to reaching a deal with an Irish development group Harcourt Developments to help rebuild Bellingham's waterfront as part of the Port of Bellingham Waterfront Redevelopment Project.

Port of Bellingham Environmental Analyst Mike Hogan gave a presentation on the project during the 101st Annual Conference in Longview. Click here to view his presentation.

Harcourt submitted one of four proposals received in July 2013 to be master developer for the 10.8 acre parcel that is adjacent to downtown Bellingham alongside the Whatcom Waterway and includes the Granary Building. The Port also received three development proposals for restoration and re-use of the Granary Building and project proposals for development of a hotel and for affordable housing.

 

Harcourt is a major international developer with extensive waterfront redevelopment experience in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Europe and other parts of the world. A significant Harcourt project is the major redevelopment of a former shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland (Titanic Quarter). In the company's proposal, Harcourt noted that its core development group would be reinforced with local firm and advisors if chosen for the Bellingham project.

 

Since 2013 the Port has worked with local project partners to review all proposals, interview all potential developers and make a recommendation to the Commission. The selection of Harcourt Developments was the unanimous choice of the group.
