Welcome to the Greenport Harbor Brewing Company May newsletter, "LIVE DEEP". Live Deep is our interpretation and belief in a passage of Henry David Thoreau's book Walden. ( A lot has happened in the last few months and it will only be getting busier! Find below some of the happenings past, present and future.

Something new, something old, something borrowed, something blue.

“FAR OUT THERE” - 7% - A double dry hopped New England style IPA brewed with a malt bill of pilsner, 2-row, oats, and flaked wheat. Hopped excessively with Galaxy, Citra, and Mosaic. A tropical juice melange. Notes of Mango, passionfruit, berries, papaya, candied citrus.

“CITRUS BLUE PERSUASION - 4.8% - Blueberry limeade inspired Berliner Weisse collab with our friends at @kcbcbeer - Brewed with Pilsner, German Wheat, and NYS Red wheat. Fermented with our house ale yeast and conditioned on heaps of blueberries. Finally dosed with a quenching amount of lime juice.

“SECOND ROUND KNOCKOUT” - 8% "The return!" of our Double IPA with a huge emphasis on the saturation of hop flavors. A 5 hop blend of some of our choicest crops meld together to bring forth an explosion of floral, fruity and resinous flavors. Our yeast imparts a softer profile and helps drive the hop character to the furthest possible boundaries.

This release hits the tasting room on Friday 4/27!

What is "O G" or "Original Greenport”?

O G is very simply the series of small batch beers we make at our "Original Greenport" brewery.

On July 12th, 2009, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company opened in a very small, old fire house in the heart of Greenport, NY. Our dream was to brew the best possible beer we could. In two years, we realized that if we wanted to keep dreaming and stay in control of all of our brewing, we would need "to find a bigger boat" (See Sheriff Brody from Jaws). In the next 5 years we did just that. Finding, building, scraping together loose change, and finally brewing in our new larger Peconic space. End of story? Not yet.

You see we couldn't get away from how ridiculously important our original brewhouse, original building, and original dreams were. It was the heart of who we were and are. For that reason, we knew what we had to do. We had to find a brewer whose primary job was to keep dreaming. Would it be barrel aging, or sours, or working with local farmers or going on hard to find hop hunting missions? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Look for O G in monthly limited kegs and small bottle releases. And if you are ever in the Greenport Brewery and see our head brewer Pat Alfred, say hello. (But don't wake him up.)

Collaborations began the month of April with 2 of our favorite breweries, Sand City and KCBC. The Sand City beer, Facing Infinity, a Double IPA doubly dry-hopped with Citra, El Dorado, and Mosaic came and went very fast.
A little too fast unfortunately but like any old friend we will be scheduling a return visit.
Next up was a visit from our friends in Brooklyn KCBC. The collar was a perfectly timed weather specific Berliner Weiss called "Citus Blue Persuasion".
This liquid refresher was patterned after the flavor profile of a blueberry limeade. One taste and the sunny days become a little sunnier and any frown gets turned upside down. Magic you say? Maybe.
This months Ask a Brewer comes with a little help. Meet Maggie Smith, the youngest member of the Greenport Family. Her father Bryan works for Greenport on the brewery floor doing pretty much everything including a focus on lab work.
He is an invaluable and often sleep deprived dynamo. Congratulations to him and even more to his wife Cait.
What was the first beer that blew you away?

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. I remember sitting on the steps behind my dorm, drinking my first six pack of that beer with my friend and talking about how cool it would be to make beer for a living. We bought our first homebrew kit soon after.

Color of your favorite sweater.

It is different shades of brown. It is called The Original Westerly. It's the Dude's sweater.

Favorite curse word.

I don't have much occasion to swear, but when I do it's usually an unintelligible string of mumbled curse words, like the dad in A Christmas Story.

What do you do?

I like to think my official title is "Director of Cool Guy Operations." Seriously though, I guess you could call me a general brewery worker. I do a little bit of everything. Since I've started at Greenport Harbor I've been involved in almost every aspect of our production from receiving raw ingredients, to serving the beer in the tasting room.

Who is your beer hero?

Probably Charlie Papazian. Starting as a homebrewer, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing was a foundational book for me. Plus his motto, "relax, don't worry, have a homebrew" is something I try to live my life by.

What is your desert island beer?

I think it would have to be our Tidal Lager. It is just a lovely, balanced, refreshing beer. If I could drink that beer everyday, I would.

What is your favorite spot on the North Fork?

It's a toss-up between our two brewery/tasting room locations. I really enjoy my job and the people I work with!
