April 20, 2017

Dear Y Supporter,

It is amazing to see the Y through a child's eyes. I recently had the opportunity to speak with a young  family that was willing to share how the Y has come to mean so much to them. They shared the obstacles that they have overcome, and how the Y has played a crucial role in their daughter's development, and the overall positive impact Y programs have had on her.

At just 5 years old, she has faced many medical hurdles, but has found a sense of belonging and independence through her participation in Y programs. In fact, their little one loves the Y so much, when the family passes their local health, fitness, and aquatics facility, she yells "That's my Y!"

This family's story helped me realize how much of a positive influence the Y can have on a child - something that I think every child deserves the opportunity to experience.  The conversation really helped to reinforce the importance of our Annual Y Strong Kids Campaign and remind me why the Y's programs are so important to our community.

From basketball and swimming, to the highly anticipated arrival of summer camp the Y Strong Kids Campaign ensures every child in our community has the opportunity to learn new skills, explore hidden talents, and build lifelong social skills and self-confidence.

This year, the team at the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region has a goal to raise $225,000 through the Y Strong Kids Campaign. These vital funds will help provide positive and life-changing opportunities to every child in our community regardless of their background or financial circumstances, and thanks to your support we are almost half way there!

This year we have seen supporters of all ages join the fundraising efforts. From fun activities like a Toonie Dive and 3 on 3 basketball tournament, to aerobic challenges like an Aquafit Extravaganza and the Y Cycle for Strong Kids. No matter how they participated, individuals all had one thing in common, they did it to better the lives of children in our community.

So we want to take this time to say thank you for your continued support - without you and your belief in the Y's mission we would not be able to assist all of those who turn to us in their time of need.

Because of you, their future starts here!

With much gratitude,

Y Story:

The YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region counts itself very lucky to have a strongpartnership with PBC Group and its entire organization!

PBC Group was started in 1956 by Peris Bouzanis. Its beginnings were marked by constructing housing for the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation within the City of Ottawa. The family owned and operated business swiftly branched out into virtually every sector of the construction industry. In 1985, Peris's son Paul Bouzanis refocused PBC Group to specialize in Project Development and Construction Management, including services for non-profit organizations. More recently, the business has grown exponentially to include an asset management company, which through the use of limited partnerships pursues, develops, acquires, funds, finances, and manages various assets including land real property and mortgages.

Just as PBC Group is focused on serving their clients through superior service, they have also served the Ottawa Community through superior philanthropic support. The Y is honoured to count PBC Group amongst its most loyal supporters; when asked why they have chosen to be such a committed partner to the Y, they were as passionate in their response as they are in their support:

"We believe the true definition of 'community' is a group of people co-existing, sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. PBC Group shares the same common attitudes, interests, and goals as the Y and is a firm believer in a stronger, healthier Canada. Everyone deserves an equal opportunity for healthy childhood development, physical exercise, skills development, education and learning opportunities, and supportive housing."

One of the distinguishing factors that sets PBC Group apart from other firms, is that they are genuinely engaged and take a vested interest in the positive impact they are making on individuals in our community.

In 2017, PBC Group and the Y took their partnership to the next level, with PBC Group sponsoring the Y's complete lineup of fundraising events. Engaging their entire team in the company's philanthropic efforts, it is not uncommon to see PBC Group team members sweating it out during the Y Cycle for Strong Kids, or taking the plunge and rappelling down the Y's 16 Story Shenkman Residence Tower for the Y's Cliffhanger event - there is always someone from the PBC team taking part, and many others enthusiastically cheering them on.

Beyond their current efforts, the PBC Group team took a moment to reflect on and share how the Y has influenced their personal lives:

"Within our organization the team has shared fond memories of their local Y's, reflecting on cherished childhood memories. Some of our employees now have children of their own and have shared with us the benefits of having the Y within the community. They have explained that the Y provides a much needed network for new moms and children. Others have hosted their child's birthday party, and even watched their own children learn how to swim in the same pool in which they learned as a child.

Regardless of the various uses of the Y organization and its facility, everyone at PBC Group could agree on one thing: the Y brings people together. It provides opportunities unlike any other organization, and it does not close its doors on anyone. For generations, the Y is and has always been a common place for children, youth, adults and families to grow and develop."

We know the Y is not the only local organization to benefit from the generosity of PBC Group - their decades of giving back can be felt across the City. We cannot thank PBC Group enough for their continued support of the health and well-being of children in our community!

Membership has its privileges!

In 2016, the Y launched our exclusive Heart of Gold monthly giving club: Any member of a Y fitness facility, who makes a monthly donation in support of the Y's charitable mission automatically becomes a member of this special group of individuals.

This spring, Heart of Gold Club members will gain an added benefit. Currently in its trial phase, Gold Card holders who use the Carlingwood Y facilities will have access to WiFi, 4 times fast than that of other members.

To obtain access to this special network, please visit the Carlingwood Y front desk with your WiFi compatible device.

Not a member of the Heart of Gold monthly giving club? It's never too late to join!

Visit your local Y's Health, Fitness, and Aquatics facility membership desk and ask for a Heart of Gold pledge form. Or visit us online at and make a monthly gift today.

While many members of the Y enjoy the health benefits of our facilities, other community members turn to the Y for the many other resources and support we provide: programs such as shelter, employment services, and safe and affordable childcare.

Did you know: For a little over $2/month you can provide something as important as a warm meal for someone taking refuge in our emergency shelter? Or that for $9/month you can give a youth the opportunity to join a recreational basketball program for three months?

Y Thanks:

On March 29, individual's from

across our region joined together to take part in a 1.5 hour indoor cycle ride. Guided by three highly-skilled and energetic instructors, this endorphin - pumping, sweat- inducing event helped raise $50,000 for the Y Strong Kids Campaign.

Thanks to all of our dedicated riders for taking up the challenge to raise vital funds for children in our community.

Over the past year couple of years, Centura Tile has given kids in our community the chance to make everlasting memories, by giving them an experience they would not otherwise be able to afford.

Centura Tile has donated their box seats at The Canadian Tire Centre to allow Y kids and their families the opportunity to experience exciting shows like Disney on Ice and The Harlem Globetrotters.

On behalf of all the children and families that have benefited from your generosity, thank you  for making these memories possible!

Now in its 9th year, this charitable hockey tournament, formally known as the Jim O'Grady Memorial Hockey Tournament, is a full day round robin competition, led by a group of dedicated volunteers from the Ottawa legal community.

By engaging legal professionals, their

families, and their friends this friendly competition raises vital funds to support of the Y Kids Club: Before and After School program

While the real winners are the kids and their families who benefit from the Y Kids Club, we would like to give an extra special shout-out to this year's tournament winners Caza Saikaley - LMD!

Thank you to all the players, volunteers, and team sponsors who helped make this year's tournament a resounding success.
