Dear Reader,
We have two stories this issue on how lives
can be turned around from hurt, despair and hopelessness to calm, hope
and prospect. The first concerns Timorese as they race on to new
horizons in the newly independent nation's first ever
international marathon race. This is part of the President's vision
for a more unified country through programmes like sports for youths.
Our second tale is a true story as well, but with greater urgency. It
is about our neighbours in Padang who are still
picking up the pieces and trying to rebuild their lives (starting with
homes) following a massive earthquake last year. Our Indonesian
correspondent Kayti Denham witnessed how some volunteers use usual
methods to reach out for education and engagement - through music, art
and even dance.
Thanks for reading Gaia Discovery and tell us what you think about the
stories by leaving a comment at the end.

Ecotourism: Mati City Boasts Nature, Beaches, Dinosaur Island,
Carmelite Monastery
If Palawan is the last frontier of the
Philippines, it's Mati City in Davao region. That's according to city
administrator Richard L. Villacorte. "We don't want to experience
what had happened to other tourist destinations in the country,"
he explained. Henrylito D.Tacio reports.

The process of
reclaiming lives, rebuilding homes and regaining a foothold in some form
of normal existence is still in its early stages in Padang following an
earthquake last year, observes Kayti Denham. However, there are a few
outstanding individuals and organisations who are reaching out to the
people in unique ways.
