November 2009 Highlights

Dear Reader,

Mal with MikeRecently I met extreme adventurer Mike Horn (pictured here) who defied nature in pushing the limits. Among his achievements: circumnavigating the globe around the equator, trekking the Arctic, flagging the tip of the North Pole. Now he sails the world in a purpose-built yacht to clear rubbish in the oceans while getting youths on board to conserve eco systems. Here's one man who believes in making a difference, in his own way. And so can we.

We can perhaps start with vacations. Where's that magical place that'll knock our socks off, at the same time stays untainted? Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Awards has recognised a few resorts in exotic destinations that operate in harmony with the environment - from India to the Philippines. Read about them and other destinations in this issue, and support eco travel by booking up. (Get better rates by going through Gaia Discovery - click on Agoda.com banner on the homepage for accommodation choices.) More eco travel tips here.

And Christmas shopping? Instead of the usual, try something different, and creative. Like buying gift items made of recycled materials or from sustainable sources. When throwing parties, prepare more locally-grown vegetables than meat.

In the next few weeks, I'll be exploring North Sulawesi, Indonesia to bring you stories about people and places that may make you smile.

And as an early Christmas gift to me, can I ask you to tell one other person about Gaia Discovery? Just forward this email, and say, click on Mailing List. Thanks!

See you next month! Until then, tread gently.

First he pushed the limits of heights and boundaries as an extreme explorer. Next, Mike Horn is bent on spreading the word about saving Gaia by shaping youths to see the world as it is, and to take positive action. Mallika Naguran boards the Pangaea to bring you the exclusive report of Mike's yacht and his mission.

Preserving environment, heritage and moreWild Asia held its fourth Responsible Tourism Award that sought to recognise and reward exemplary travel operators that stood out from the rest - the eco way. Three winners emerged from eight finalists, from six Asian countries, and they are... Mallika Naguran reports..

Archaeological Finds, Mythical Caves at Maitum, Philippines
From ancient finds to ultramodern municipal building, from cascading waterfalls to crystal-clear rivers, from beautiful coasts to mythical caves, from endangered tarsier to time-warped marine turtles, from idyll poblacion to adrenalin-rush river tubing, Maitum has it all, says Henrylito D.Tacio.

Water Shortage Threatens Food Crisis
Preserving environment, heritage and moreBeyond safe drinking and sanitation, water plays a critical role in food production, reports Henrylito D. Tacio. The food crisis is compounded by millions of wealthier people in developing countries turning away from traditional rice and cereal-based diets to western dairy and meat-based foods that require more water.
